Clergy – Clero

Rev. Fr. Joseph Shaute

Fr. Joseph Shaute, or known as “Fr. Joe”, grew up in an Army family in Miami Lakes, Florida.   As a young Altar Server he began to feel the tug of the call to the Vocation of the Priesthood.  It is also during this time that he picked up the Spanish language from his Hispanic school peers which composed of a large population of the students.

In 1984 he moved to Georgia and later graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.  Following graduation, he worked in the journalism field for several years. This also included a stint in sports writing.   As a parishioner at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Marietta, Fr. Joe was very active with the youth and young adult ministry programs.

In 1996, Fr. Joe heeded the call with some trepidation and entered the seminary.  Unable to sell his house initially, it sold on Good Friday and that became a moment of affirmation as he heard that voice say, “Now do you trust me?” Fr. Joe was ordained into the Priesthood in June 2001.

As a bilingual speaker, Fr. Joe spent a summer in the Dominican Republic in 1997 and in Mexico in 2003 to immerse in the language and culture.  This training brought him to St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in 2003 to serve as Parochial Vicar until 2007.  At St. Theresa, Fr. Joe worked with the Liturgy Committee, the Altar Servers and many other functions as well as served as the main celebrant for the Spanish Masses.

For the past 10 years, Fr. Joe has served as the Pastor at St. Clement’s Catholic Church in Calhoun, Georgia.  In that tenure, Fr. Joe has kept a pulse on the St. Theresa community by presenting a Lenten Mission and returning periodically for special celebrations.

Though “free time” is a premium, Fr. Joe likes to spend it reading, writing, and playing golf.  He also enjoys most sports, history and trivia.  Fr. Joe has an incredible memory so it is not suggested that anyone play against him in trivia.  It is great joy that we welcome back Fr. Joe to the St. Theresa family. Please stop by the reception after the 5:00 pm Saturday Mass and all the Masses on Sunday to welcome back Fr. Joe!

Rev. Fr. Luis E.  Álvarez

Fr. Luis E. Álvarez comes to us from the Island of Enchantment, Puerto Rico, where he was born and raised. He moved to “the mainland” to begin a college career in engineering in 2001, but God had other plans. After a few years of college study at Georgia Tech, another few years of discernment while in his home parish (Immaculate Heart of Mary), applying to the Archdiocese of Atlanta in 2006 and beginning his formation at St. Vincent Seminary in 2007, Fr. Luis was ordained to the priesthood on June 28, 2014. Since then, he has served as parochial vicar at Prince of Peace in Flowery Branch, GA as his first assignment. In his passion for music and liturgy, Fr. Luis planned all Spanish liturgies at the seminary for over 4 years, as well as co-directed the St. Cecilia choir at Prince of Peace. Fr. Luis will begin his second assignment at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus on July 1st, 2016.

His favorite Scripture passage is Micah 6:6-8:  “With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow before God most high? Shall I come before him with burnt offering, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with myriad streams of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my crime, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
