ADULT CONFIRMATION / CONFIRMACIÓN DE ADULTOS

Holy Spirit

Confirmation is one of the three sacraments of initiation in the Catholic faith.  According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), “By the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.  Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed” (par.1285).

Like Baptism, Confirmation can only be received once since it imprints on our soul an indelible spiritual mark. At Confirmation, we are marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit.

Who Needs the Sacrament of Confirmation?

All Baptized Catholics who received the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

Why do Catholics need Confirmation?

Confirmation focuses on the celebration and sealing of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  The sacrament reminds us that the Holy Spirit dwells among us and in us to continue our process of conversion. The Confirmation sessions prepare Catholics and their sponsors to be fuller witnesses of the Gospel in the Church and community by living and professing our Catholic faith.

Adults 18 or older who have received their Sacraments of Baptism and First Communion and are seeking to come into full communion with the Catholic Church can attend preparation classes on Sunday afternoons from 3:30-4:30 pm.  These classes will continue until the day of Confirmation – Date TBA, which will take place in conjunction with our High School students receiving their Confirmation.

Classes focus on the sacrament itself and on Church teachings so they can be fully prepared to be members of the Catholic faith. The candidates choose a patron saint and a sponsor.  The patron saint is chosen based on attributes he or she exhibited in life that the candidate wishes to emulate, or for some other similar reason.

The sponsor chosen must be a man or woman faithfully living out the Catholic faith.  The sponsor is to be a support and a role model of Catholic Christian living.  It is appropriate to choose one’s baptismal godparent as one’s sponsor (if possible) with the connection that Confirmation and Baptism truly have.
