Special Needs

Welcome to our S.P.R.E.D. (Special People of Religious Education Doctrine) class!  My name is Mary Kuchinski and I am the founder and director of S.P.R.E.D at St. Theresa. Prior to starting this wonderful program, I had been a Catechist for 24 years. My husband and I are proud parents of 5 children and our son, Scott, who is 25 years old, is Autistic.

Our class is open to all Catholic individuals of all ages with disabilities.  We have a curriculum that is comprehensive and covers the major aspects of the Roman Catholic faith, such as knowledge of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  The students will learn about the Sacraments of the Church, as well as preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation.  They will learn about the celebration of the Mass, the life of Christ, the Blessed Mother, the beliefs of the Catholic Church, the saints, and will be taught the prayers that are familiar to all Catholics.

We have had 4 students receive their First Communion and 1 Confirmation since we began.

Our children with disabilities have a way of showing their love for God that inspires all those around them. They thrive on the symbols and rituals of their faith.  Children with intellectual disabilities should be fully welcomed and included in the life of the Church.

Our children have a power that cannot be expressed in words. The powerful world has an agenda and demands answers.  Our children have no agenda, but, by their presence, we come to understand love.  It is by looking into their eyes that we come to see and experience Jesus’ love.

If you are interested in having your child, teen, or adult attend this class please call 770.942.9765 ext.2 Theresa Butorac, Director of Faith Formation.
